Orlando Family Fun

We had a blast!! The resort was perfect, the weather was perfect, the parks were spectacular and everyone was happy to be together in a magical place! I did have to hit Wal-Mart to buy a hoodie and jeans because it got cold at night.

Tony and I landed in Orlando Friday afternoon. We picked up the rental vehicle and went to the resort. After we dropped off our bags and checked on the kid's flight we headed off to Epcot. Tony went on a couple of crazy rides and we did a few that were more my speed lol. We left the park and headed to the airport to pick up the kids. Once we got to the airport there were no Air Canada flights, of course I started to get upset. Lucky for me to be married to Mr. Cool and he found a flight that had arrived from Denver. YIPEE, they arrived safe and sound.

The resort was awesome, enough room for everyone! After a good night sleep we hit the park running! Seriously I think we opened and closed each park we went to.

Animal Kingdom - one of my favourites! We did all the rides and took in the Lion King Show. It was pretty much the same as when we went in the early 2000s. But they did add a trapeze act with the monkeys. We went on this crazy water ride and it was ssssoooo much fun! Yes people, I was SOAKED and walked around the park with wet clothes. If I had brought another set of clothes I would have gone on it again. We went on a safari ride and took some amazing pictures, it was great! The Bug's Life show bothered Alycia a wee bit because it sprays water in your face. I think everyone had fun at this park.

Magic Kingdom - Wow, everyone (not me) went on all the roller coasters. Of course we wanted to ride Pirates but it was having mechanical issues, we decided to come back the next day. Josh and Alycia missed the Jungle Cruise because they wanted Space Mountain, Tony and Chris managed to do both. Thank God Small World was shut down because Tony would have insisted we ride it.

Universal Adventure - OMG where do I begin? The Hulk was one of the top roller coasters, I bet they went on that ride 10 times or more. There were so many rides that were simulators so of course I was ecstatic! I'm very happy when my feet stay on the ground lol. My favourite was all the Harry Potter stuff. We had Butter Beer, absolutely delicious but I can't begin to describe it. Kind of like a gingerbread slurpee with whipped cream on top but different. You just have to go and taste it yourself. I went on the main ride in Hogwarts but I kept my eyes closed, screamed every time I managed to peek and my back was in agony when we got off. The second time Tony and Chris went on it the ride everything went dark and they were stuck tilted back for a couple of minutes. For first timers they probably thought it was part of the ride I would have totally flipped out. I went shopping in downtown Hogsmeade and checked out the wand shop. No, I didn't buy one because not one of them picked me out lol. We had such a blast at this park.

Disney Hollywood Studios - Star Tours was my favourite ride, we went on it twice. Adam and I sat out on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror but he did go on Rock 'n' Roller Coaster featuring music by Aerosmith. We took in all the live entertainment, hit every single ride. Hecht I even sat in on an American Idol Experience. People visiting the park audition and they pick the top performers and have a grand finale sometime but I forget what the Ryan imposter said lol. It was fun to watch and vote using the handy dandy control. Apparently Carrie Underwood and Skyler from last season were finalist from Disney auditions. The big winner gets a front row pass at the auditions in Florida so it can be a big deal. Unfortunately the backlot tour was under regular maintenance, I really wanted to go on it. I made Tony go on the Little Mermaid ride and I took a ton of pictures because Alycia loves that movie. We ran out of time and missed the animation studio, had a blast there when we were here years ago. I thought Josh would love doing voice overs but hopefully we will get there again.

Universal Studios Florida - I went on the most rides at this park and was doing fine until I went on the Simpsons, my back was in agony again. Men In Black was a ton of fun and I beat Adam and Tony's score. Lucky for me Josh came in my car and told me what and when to shoot, so I had a little help. We went in this disaster ride and part of the show was getting a group of volunteers to act out scenes in front of a green screen. They were down to asking for the last volunteer and we twisted Christian's arm - the guy picked him. The volunteer before Christian was an older slightly chubby guy (named Chris) that was supposed to play a young hot male role. When Christian went on stage the other Chris switched places and the audience laughed. Christian had to act like he was terrified and falling in slow motion. At the end of the ride we watched the little disaster trailer for the "new Universal movie". It was great and the last scene was Christian falling down a cliff.

He has performed in NYC and Orlando, he wants to get a job as a cast member at either of the Disney parks. They had signs up advertising they were hiring new cast members, it would be a great experience. All the Disney employees appeared very happy at their jobs and so did Universal employees. Heck Toby and I could retire and work down there lol.

We left Wednesday and the kids had two more days. They went to Blizzard Beach and Epcot. It was so cold and windy their last day they hung out at the activity centre in the resort instead of hitting another park. They seemed to have enjoyed their last two days without us.

That will be our last family vacation until Tony's contract is up in Bermuda. He said people can holiday here since we have two spare rooms. When we are done here Tony said something about him and Christian going to The World Cup and then taking us all to England to show us where he lived before moving to Calgary. It sounds like it would be great and I'm getting much better with my fear of flying! Never took any Ativan at all this trip - that's a big deal for me!

I will be posting pictures on Facebook soon.

Weeks 9-10 and Maybe More

Had a great visit with the boys! Adam didn't have a lot of time in the sun because Hurricane Sandy was off the cost. We spent our time catching up and he taught me how to find my favourite TV shows on the internet. Unfortunately he introduced me to Breaking Bad, I have 2 episodes left to watch and I will be caught up.

Adam did help us with the Mini Gulf stall at the school bazaar. No, we did not win the car but we did finally get our washer and dryer. I am sure my landlord thinks I am completely crazy because I did my happy dance when they arrived. I did four loads of laundry in 2 days. We also bought a big garbage can which is a big deal for me because it means no more ants in the garbage!!!!!

The day after Adam left Jim and Zoria MacDonald arrived for 8 days. We have hit some beaches, shopped and tried out some new pubs. Zoria and I had lunch at a pub in St. George on Saturday and our table was out looking over the ocean. We kept hearing some splashing in the water but couldn't see anything. We did notice some little minnows in the water but nothing else. Our server asked if we would like to feed the fish and of course we said yes. OMG you should have seen the fish! Naturally I didn't have my camera but we plan to go again before they leave. When we threw bread into the water the fish came to us. We saw a variety of small colourful fish, Brills (they are long thin fish that have a trumpet shaped nose) and these large disc shaped fish that were silver with a large black circle on their tales. The large fish actually jumped out of the water to eat the bread, they were our splashing noise. We watched them for over an hour.

The weather has been great since they arrived. Sorry everyone but we have had 24-26 degrees Celsius with humidity running 59-70%. There is another storm approaching from the south but they predict it will stay off our coast and head to New Jersey again. Thank God it is only a storm and not another hurricane.

Today we took a taxi tour and found some beautiful spots to take visitors to. We discovered a spot where you could see some beautiful fish in the water. Jim went back later and discovered some caves that you can swim in. He will share his pictures and I will post them later.

Tony and I booked Jim a tee time for his 70th birthday (Nov. 10) tomorrow so Zoria and I are going shopping again. The plan is to start in St. George and finish in Hamilton. Wednesday I am taking them to the Crystal Caves in the morning and we will end our day at the beach.

They leave Thursday morning and we leave Friday morning to meet the boys and Alycia in Orlando.

Sorry, I will try to write my blogs once a month to let you know what is happening. After Christmas things will quiet down over here. At this point our next visitors might be Josh and Alycia if they come in the spring. The Wakefords may come during the Easter break.

I will put more pictures on Facebook. Take care everyone and I miss you all very much!

Week 8

Dan left Thanksgiving day and two of my boys arrived the next day. The weather has not been very cooperative since the boys arrived and Christian is going home tomorrow.

We have gone to a couple of beaches and the aquarium. When we went to John Smith's Bay a man ran out into the ocean towards this strange looking rock. He swam to the rock, grabbed it and swam back to shore. He actually pulled in a 100 pound Rock Fish (watch for pictures).

One rainy day we went to Sears because we needed a new TV and decided to purchase a washer and dryer too. We brought the TV home and once the new order of washers come in we will go back and buy a washer and dryer. The salesman was hopeful they would be in tomorrow, hope so because it is almost time to do laundry again. It will be so nice to not have to go to the laundromat anymore.

Yesterday we had another hurricane 100 NM off the coast of Bermuda. There was lots of wind and rain, our tank is probably full again. People keep telling me Bermuda is due to be hit and I just keep praying for them to pass by us. I have been told that winter storms are worse than hurricanes. I will let you know once that happens lol.

Today the boys and I went to the Dockyards. We walked through the shops and went to Snorkel Beach. There were two ships in today. When we took the ferry we had entertainment on the ferry. First time this has ever happened. The gentleman was playing the steel drum, yes I took a picture. We walked down Front Street too.

Poor Christian only had a couple of nice days this trip but he did manage to get his school work done. We are supposed to have sunshine for the next couple of days and then rain off and on for the weekend. Summer is over in Bermuda.

Adam is going to help us with the our mini golf stall at the school bizarre. Not sure if he will want to help out the entire time because we are there from 10 to 10 for both days. I hope we win the first prize - a new car! Adam still has over two weeks here and we plan on taking him to some more beaches.

Saturday we Skyped the family for my mom's birthday party. It was great seeing my mom, Dan, Debbie, Laurie, Joyce, Andrea, Daleney, Tessa, Evan and Carter. Missed the boys who were playing video games in Dan's basement. We also Skyped Ang on Sunday. She has my dogs so well trained now. Monday we Skyped with Josh and Alycia. Found out Josh was in emergency because of suspected kidney stones. I still don't know if it was stones or something else because he changed the subject. He said he did want his mommy but called for Adam instead. He didn't want to worry me because he knew I would have taken the first plane home.

It has been great having my boys here and in a few short weeks we will all be together in Disney World for five glorious days! The kids will be there for a week but Tony only has a five day break.

Hope everyone is well, miss you all!

Week 7

The school has their HUGE fundraiser coming up October 19 and 20. I have been calling families looking for volunteers to help at the "Jack and Jill Mini Golf" booth. It seems like we will be working long hours on Saturday because I couldn't line up any volunteers. We did buy a raffle ticket, the first price is a new car! I would love to win that.

I was helping Tony and the music teacher Monday mornings and reading tests to coded students but found out I am not allowed to. Apparently immigration looks at it that I am doing a job the school could pay a Bermudian to do. Immigration is very strict here so the admin team will write a letter asking permission for me to volunteer in the school.

We have been hosting Dan Osborne, he gave a two day PD on diploma exams. He and Tony went to 11 beaches in 3 days. Dan loved going on the scooter with Tony. He really loved snorkelling and taking in all the sights. He leaves tomorrow but plans to bring his family here one day.

We met up with friends Saturday night. We all walked along Clearwater Beach in the moonlight and saw a bright shooting star - it was brilliant! I spoke to mom, Debbie, Lee and Dan Saturday night after our Skype attempt failed. I loved talking to everyone. Much later Dan and I were able to Skype until the wee hours of the morning.

Tony and I Skyped with his family tonight as everyone was gathered for Thanksgiving. I missed two dinners this year but people ate all my favourite dishes for me! Tony and the Canadian teachers are making Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow for their fellow teachers, Bermuda doesn't have Thanksgiving.

I will post more pictures that I took well Dan was here and I took a picture of a whistling frog. They are very cute and about the size of my thumb nail. How the heck something so tiny makes so much noise is beyond me! I still have trouble sleeping because of their noise lol. If you ever call Tony's phone you can hear them in the background. Even the locals ask me what the noise is. I think it is exceptionally loud hear because we are surrounded by open spaces.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Week 6

Ang left on Tuesday, this has been the first weekend we have been here alone. It was a very week, I volunteered at Tony's school Monday-Thursday helping with school pictures. The little ones are so cute and were so excited when they found out who I was. One little guy in kindergarten asked if I came from Canada with Mr. Makowski and did I know I lived in Alberta in the grasslands near the mountains lol. His little eyes kept growing with each word out of his mouth. Another little girl told me that Mr. Makowski had the "funnest" ties, his Superman tie is her favourite. I really enjoyed listening to their stories.

The middle school and senior high students were typical, no different from any other student I worked with. The lady that worked with me was very nice. She took me to an awesome coffee shop with cheap coffee that tastes GREAT!!! We went for lunch on Thursday at the coffee place too.

I finally picked up a phone - YEAH now I call people when I need to. Decided to look for work after our family trip to Orlando, truly doubt I will find anything but I do have a couple of contact numbers for the government and their school office. For those of you who don't know Tony and I are meeting the boys and Alycia in Orlando for a fun family holiday. I can't wait, we are going to Disney World and Universal - get to go to Harry Potter.

The weather here has been great but it did rain a lot this weekend. It is supposed to be beautiful from Tuesday on. There is a tropical storm/hurricane that has been hanging out in the ocean for over a week now and of course that has caused me great pain. No, not worrying about it because it isn't a threat to Bermuda but it does cause changes in the barometric pressure which causes me migraines. I did bring a lot of my prescription with me but I do need to see a doctor here to get more. Tony found us a doctor already, I just have to make an appointment and go. It isn't like at home, he called her one day and had an appointment that afternoon - no waiting days to see your doctor. Hopefully I will never have to find out what the hospitals are like.

Tony has been riding his scooter every day!!! He loves it, especially that it only costs him about $5 a week for gas. I am still trying to work up the courage to go on it with him. I did ride on it when we went to Grotto Bay which is a 5 minute ride. My feet doesn't touch the foot rest so I had to figure out what to do with them and by the time we got there my legs were tired. I squeezed them into the scooter because he told me not to move when I was on the back lol. In time I will be fine to ride around on it. He took it to pick up a few groceries and was very happy with how many bags he could carry on the scooter and his back pack.

Yesterday we spent the day with friends. I felt spoiled, never had to cook or wash dishes. Great food, great friends and wonderful conversation. We took the bus home and Tony drove Celine home on the back of the scooter. She is the same age as Josh and I didn't want her out on the roads after dark all alone so I said she had to take the bus home with us and then Tony would drive her home. She refers to Tony and Van as her "Bermuda dads" because they are the same age as her dads lol. She is a great kid and teacher. Today they went to 5 beaches and she took him out for lunch.

Well, I am going to the school this week to help count raffle tickets and to help with the Open House on Wednesday. I am very excited because I am taking the #1 bus into Hamilton and I will get to see Johnny Barnes. Ang sent me a YouTube link about this Bermudian who greats the traffic coming into Hamilton by waving, blowing kisses and yelling out, "I love you!" He is there every morning rain or shine from 6-10. I will let you know all about him next week.

Miss and love you all,
Leanne

p.s. too tired to proof this so ignore spelling and grammar

Week 5

Wow, we have been here for over a month. Angie and I have visited parks, taken pictures of beautiful flowers, shopping and of course we hit some pretty amazing beaches. She leaves tomorrow afternoon but she said she would come visit us again.

Tony got his scooter license and has been driving it every day. I haven't been on it yet but one day I will get on the back of Barney the Purple Scooter lol. It is so much easier for him going to and from work every day.

This week I am volunteering at Tony's school for picture days. Today we did the elementary students and they are sure cute! I wasn't the shortest person in the gym lol. They were so cute, when they found out I was Mrs. Makowski I heard lots about Calgary, Canada and the grasslands. It was surprising to hear they see Tony every day in their classrooms. When I asked Tony about that he said he may have been in their class once or twice lol ... so cute.

I hope you are all enjoying the pictures I have been posting on Facebook, I have learned how to put them on here and will do that when I have some new pictures.

We missed a few birthdays in September but I can wish my family and friends birthday wishes on Facebook. I missed an 18th and 30th birthday celebrations - heard about the fun and great food. It was awesome to see the pictures on Facebook.

Well, it is going to be a busy week volunteering at Tony's school, online Braille class and finally going to pick up a cell phone. We do have free long distance on Tony's cell phone, let me know if you want me to call you and when is a good time to call.

Miss you all!

Week 4

It is hard to believe that we have been in Bermuda for four weeks, one month on September 19th. We had a few days of rain because of other hurricanes out in the ocean. But the weather now is perfect! The temperature has been around 27 and the humidity is around 74%.

We went to Church's Bay Beach on the weekend and it was AWESOME, great place to snorkel. Please check out my pictures on Facebook. After we left that beach Tony and Angie went to Horseshoe Bay Beach which is everyone's favourite - most popular beach on the island. Today Ang and I spent the day at Horseshoe again. Can you all believe that I went up to my thighs in the ocean?!?!?! Most of you who know me know that I don't like the water or being wet. We ended the day at the Swizzle Inn and I even had a drink lol - it was delicious!!!!

I am getting used to the weather and I am really starting to see what a beautiful country Bermuda is.
The oceans are so blue and in some spots there are patches of emerald green. The trees and flowers are gorgeous and smell fantastic! I have said it many times and I will say it again the people are so friendly and helpful. Yes, of course you get the odd one who is grumpy but I don't even notice them anymore. Can you believe people stand and give up their seats on the bus to the elderly or people with children/pregnant women?  Not for me but for Tony lololol.

Tony is loving his job at the school! The classes are very small and they do a lot of activities. This coming Friday we get to go with the high school students on a glass bottom boat for a cruise in the harbour. I am very excited because every time someone snorkels they tell me about the beautiful fish. He said many of the students love "football" so of course he totally relates to them. He said for the most part the students are incredible.

Tony is going for his scooter license this Thursday. Our neighbour upstairs told Tony that he thinks he is ready for the test. If he passes he will be able to drive it home. The young man that sold Tony the scooter is taking it down to the license place for him because they will ask Tony how he got the scooter down there. He has been told by everyone to make sure he is very positive the entire test - we all know Tony is naturally positive so he will do fine. I'll let you know next blog if he gets his license, heck there will be pictures on Facebook.

I hope you are all keeping well, Tony and I are great! Miss you all!

Week 3

We had our very first hurricane scare. After days of driving Tony, Christian and Ang crazy with my obsession of being prepared. For those of you who know me know I was terrified. In the end it was nothing but a wind with rain. Today was still windy with some rain. Bermuda needs the rain and we need the rain in our water tank. The wind causes the ants to come in the house too. I have been spraying and sweeping trying to get them out of the apartment. I hate finding them in the cupboards but the spray I have works great, time to buy another can lol.

Christian is going home tomorrow afternoon. His time here just flew by. For his last day we went to the Crystal and Fantasy Caves followed by Christian taking us out for supper. Counting the days to our family trip to Orlando in November, 59 days.

Our niece Ang is here for two more weeks. We will be hitting the beaches and do a little shopping. It was nice having her and Christian this past week. I will take her to some of the beaches we took Christian to and try some different ones.

Please see my pictures on Facebook. There are pictures of every place we have been. You can see for yourself what a beautiful country Bermuda is.

9/03/2012

Second Week in Bermuda

We have had two full weeks in Bermuda. We are settling in and Tony fits in here like he has lived here all his life. He loves the beaches, sunshine and the heat - doesn't seem to mind the humidity either. It will take me longer but it is a very beautiful country with very nice people!

This week we did John Smith's beach, Elbow Beach and Horseshoe Beach. There was a sand castle building contest on Horseshoe Beach and I met a very nice Bermudian woman who liked to chat. Not that I could really understand everything she was saying because she kept whispering, didn't want her husband to hear lol.

Skyped with Tony's family last night. Christian has one more week on the island and he will giving a talk to the grade 12 students at Tony's school Wednesday morning. I am going to go too because I would love to hear his speech. My niece Angie is arriving tomorrow for 3 weeks. It is so nice to have people visit.

We finally have furnished all the bedrooms, bought a microwave and will go to town tomorrow to get the last few items for the kitchen and beach. I need an umbrella because there isn't a lot of shade on the beaches. Unfortunately my head doesn't like too much sun and heat.

Tony bought a scooter yesterday and will practice driving it in the church's parking lot. He just has to walk the bike down the driveway and the parking lot is right next door. After he can do all the twists, turns and zigzags he'll go for his road test. Soon he plans on getting his drivers and buying a car. Gas is very expensive so he would drive the scooter to work and use the car for road trips, groceries, laundry and picking up people from the airport. If you come visit us now you have to take a taxi but we are very close to the airport.

Adam is coming out in October and I'll have him teach me (again) how to post my pictures on here. Please keep checking my pictures on Facebook. I will be posting more pictures today or tomorrow.

Take care, miss you all!
Leanne

First Week in Bermuda

We are settling in to our new apartment. Christian arrived on August 21 for 3 weeks and has been helping us do things. We are still looking for furniture for two bedrooms and a few kitchen items.

The weather is always around 30 degrees Celcius with humidity around 80%. The weather has been very hard to deal with because I'm not used to the humidity. The bed and living room furniture are always damp.

At night we are serenaded by whistling frogs, they start around 7 and "sing" until the sun comes up. I seem to have controlled the ants in the house with a local spray that lasts for 3 months. Our landlord says the bugs will be gone in the fall but will return in the spring. They don't like the cold weather.

I have gone to Shelly Bay beach, went to the Dockyards and took a ferry. Christian and I have a list of beaches to see during his visit. Tomorrow we are heading to John Smith's Bay. Every day it will be a new adventure.

I am a little homesick, really miss my family, friends and my dogs! It was so nice to Skype with them last night. Poor dogs didn't know what to think. I wish the dogs could come with the boys when they visit us. Hopefully we can come home for Christmas. The boys and Alycia are meeting us in Orlando November 9-13.

Hopefully our Internet will be up and running this week. Tony is taking the modem and rotor in tomorrow to be recalibrated - hopefully they will only take 2 days. Our wonderful neighbors are letting us use their wifi until we get everything done. The people here just laugh and say "It's Bermuda".

Miss you all,
Leanne

8/22/2012

No internet

Internet was set up but our server provider is having issues. Once it is up and running I'll call Adam to remind me how to add pictures because I can't find my list lol!

Christian and I spent a couple of hours at Shelly Bay and tomorrow we may visit Tony at work and buy 2 fans. We plan to hit a new beach every day. The weather is fantastic! I do need to get used the heat and humidity.

Miss you all!

8/21/2012

Arrived

We arrived to beautiful Bermuda! I have taken a few pictures but we have been busy trying to set things up and settle in. Once I have my computer I will post pictures. Miss you all very much!
